The Most Inspiring Stories Audiences Will See

The story of Ramon Resa, MD‘s journey from child farmworker to pediatrician is not only inspiring, it soundly debunks societal myths and stereotypes concerning who will become a future success, with the ability to contribute to society. Dr. Resa’s is one of ten stories of high-profile professionals of color featured in the Told They Can’t © documentary film. None among them had ideal childhoods, but rather grew up facing seemingly overwhelming adversity. This includes homelessness, hunger, poverty, neglect, and abuse, exasperated by society’s cruel indifference toward their misfortune, which took place in full view of everyone in the community, including their teachers, school staff and administrators.

Many had to work full-time as child farm laborers because their family needed their earnings to be able to survive. Yet they became doctors, research scientists, engineers, educators, and leaders elected to the U.S. Congress and California State Assembly and Senate. Their impressive accomplishments include authoring hundreds of scientific research papers published in The New England Journal of Medicine; contributing to the development of pivotal Apple products such as the Bondi Blue iMac, the Cube, iPad, MacBook Pro; and teaching medicine at UCSF Fresno and Stanford School of Medicine.

Their success in turning poverty and hardship into personal and professional triumph is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. A reminder of the limitless human potential of every child, showcasing what is indeed possible for all children. A demonstration of why every child deserves to be treated with dignity and afforded opportunity – including children of refugee and immigrant families, and any experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, or other extreme family crises.
